Our Story β How NDSPG Began
Who We Are
π The National Down Syndrome Policy Group (NDSPG) started in March 2021.
π― We have one big aim:
ππ¬ β‘οΈ Make sure people with Down syndrome are listened to.
π³οΈπ€ β‘οΈ Make sure they help make decisions about things that affect their lives.
π₯β Our leaders include:
π’β€οΈ – People from Down syndrome charities.
π£οΈπͺ – People with Down syndrome who speak up for themselves.
π€οΈπ Their life experiences guide everything we do.
The Advisory Group
π¬π§ We also have an Advisory Group with over 120 adults with Down syndrome from all over the UK.
π π€ They meet regularly.
π³οΈπ§ They make their own decisions.
β€οΈποΈ They work closely with NDSPG so that people with Down syndrome are always at the heart of our work.
The Problem We Saw
π« In 2021, we saw a big problem:
ποΈπ· – People with Down syndrome were not being properly represented in Parliament.
πβπ€ – Laws to include people often did not give the real support needed.
ποΈπ There used to be a group in Parliament that spoke up for people with Down syndrome, but it closed in 2015.
π£πͺ We knew we needed a new, strong voice in politics.
Our Call to Action
ποΈπ€ We decided to start a new All-Party Parliamentary Group on Down Syndrome (APPGDS).
π We worked with:
π’ – Charities
π¨βπ©βπ§βπ¦ – Families
πΌ – Professionals
πββοΈπββοΈ – People with Down syndrome
π¨ποΈ We asked MPs from all political parties to join.
β π Many said βyes!β
ποΈπ€π Soon, the new group was ready β MPs from different parties working together for people with Down syndrome.
Lived Experience in Parliament
ππββοΈ It is important for MPs to hear directly from people with Down syndrome.
ππββοΈ From the start, our trustees included people with Down syndrome.
π¨οΈπ¬ As Heidi Crowter and James Carter say:
π«π€β‘οΈπ₯ βThere should be nothing about us, without us.β
Our Key Focus Areas
We focus on six main areas:
ποΈπ 1. Community and Wellbeing
ππ 2. Education
πΌπͺ 3. Employment
π₯π¬ 4. Healthcare and Research
π€°πΆ 5. Maternity Care
π π€ 6. Social Care
Working Together
ππ¬ NDSPG helps the APPGDS run smoothly and stay connected to the Down syndrome community.
π£οΈποΈ Together, we make sure voices are heard where important decisions happen β in Parliament.
Just the Beginningβ¦
β³ This was only the start.
πποΈπ Next came the Down Syndrome Bill β a historic moment.
