Our Story – How NDSPG Began

Who We Are

πŸ“… The National Down Syndrome Policy Group (NDSPG) started in March 2021.

🎯 We have one big aim:

πŸ‘‚πŸ’¬ ➑️ Make sure people with Down syndrome are listened to.

πŸ—³οΈπŸ€ ➑️ Make sure they help make decisions about things that affect their lives.

πŸ‘₯⭐ Our leaders include:

🏒❀️ – People from Down syndrome charities.

πŸ—£οΈπŸ’ͺ – People with Down syndrome who speak up for themselves.

πŸ›€οΈπŸŒŸ Their life experiences guide everything we do.

The Advisory Group

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ We also have an Advisory Group with over 120 adults with Down syndrome from all over the UK.

πŸ“…πŸ€ They meet regularly.

πŸ—³οΈπŸ§  They make their own decisions.

β€οΈπŸ›οΈ They work closely with NDSPG so that people with Down syndrome are always at the heart of our work.

The Problem We Saw

🚫 In 2021, we saw a big problem:

πŸ›οΈπŸš· – People with Down syndrome were not being properly represented in Parliament.

πŸ“œβŒπŸ€ – Laws to include people often did not give the real support needed.

πŸ›οΈπŸ”’ There used to be a group in Parliament that spoke up for people with Down syndrome, but it closed in 2015.

πŸ“£πŸ’ͺ We knew we needed a new, strong voice in politics.

Our Call to Action

πŸ›οΈπŸ€ We decided to start a new All-Party Parliamentary Group on Down Syndrome (APPGDS).

πŸ”— We worked with:

🏒 – Charities

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ – Families

πŸ’Ό – Professionals

πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈπŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈ – People with Down syndrome

πŸ“¨πŸ›οΈ We asked MPs from all political parties to join.

βœ…πŸŽ‰ Many said β€˜yes!’

πŸ›οΈπŸ€πŸ’™ Soon, the new group was ready β€” MPs from different parties working together for people with Down syndrome.

Lived Experience in Parliament

πŸ‘‚πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ It is important for MPs to hear directly from people with Down syndrome.

πŸ“‹πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈ From the start, our trustees included people with Down syndrome.

πŸ—¨οΈπŸ’¬ As Heidi Crowter and James Carter say:

πŸš«πŸ‘€βž‘οΈπŸ‘₯ β€œThere should be nothing about us, without us.”

Our Key Focus Areas

We focus on six main areas:

πŸ˜οΈπŸ’– 1. Community and Wellbeing

πŸŽ“πŸ“š 2. Education

πŸ’ΌπŸ’ͺ 3. Employment

πŸ₯πŸ”¬ 4. Healthcare and Research

πŸ€°πŸ‘Ά 5. Maternity Care

🏠🀝 6. Social Care

Working Together

πŸ”—πŸ’¬ NDSPG helps the APPGDS run smoothly and stay connected to the Down syndrome community.

πŸ—£οΈπŸ›οΈ Together, we make sure voices are heard where important decisions happen β€” in Parliament.

Just the Beginning…

⏳ This was only the start.

πŸ“œπŸ›οΈπŸŽ‰ Next came the Down Syndrome Bill β€” a historic moment.
